When You're Dry and Thirsty

Psalms 63

We begin this morning by looking into one of the most important aspects of our Christian life.  I don’t know about you, but I have times in my life, usually everyday, that I find myself not centered on God’s Word.  Mind you, we don’t do this on purpose, and we don’t plan on neglecting God or God’s word, but we just do it because of our nature.  For example, Paul writes this to the Corinthians, “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness unto him, neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” I Cor. 2:14.  Thus, our very nature leads us down a path of least resistance.  Which is just like water.  Water goes where it can easily flow.  Spiritually, we take that path.  Why?  Because Bible study and trying to become more like Christ is hard work and we take the path of least resistance.

In our text here in Psalms we find the David talking about his life and how he thirsts for God.  He likens it to a dry and thirsty land.  Have you ever been out in the field, either in the countryside or out in a desert and have nothing to drink?  I have for a short period of time, but just imagine what it would be like to be out there during a drought and no water in sight.  It truly is a dry and thirsty land.  Right now, I can imagine a hot day, having been out working in the yard, mowing, trimming, doing that which we have to do and getting really thirsty.
