The Arrest, The Trial, The Death

We had just finished the Passover meal with Jesus when He thought it wise to go out to the Garden of Gethsemane.  He wanted to be alone, I guess, and pray in the solitude of the garden.  When we arrived, He had us wait and He went on ahead to pray.  We were all so full from the wonderful meal, it was hard to stay awake and so we all dozed off.  He warned us on more than one occasion that evening to stay awake and pray and watch.  I didn’t understand why all the concern at the time, but He was literally consumed in sweat.  He was so rattled.  He was under great pressure and it looked as if He had been bleeding about the head.  I figured He had scratched Himself among some of the briars in the garden.  But later, I found out He had sweat great drops of blood.

Peter, James and John had gone with Him and they told us later that He was really gripped by a moment of intense agony over what He perceived was about to happen to Him.  In fact, Luke reported in his writings that He had prayed, “Father, if Thou be willing, remove this cup from Me; nevertheless, not My will, but Thine be done.”
