Life Is But A Vapor

James 4:13-15

“Now listen, you who say, Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.  Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow.  What is your life?  You are a mist (a vapor) that appears for a little while and then vanishes.  Instead, you ought to say, If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”

We are here today to remember a daughter, a sister, a granddaughter and friend.  In the face of tragic events and accidents we don’t know what to say.  Often times when we are in the company of those who have suffered the loss of life in their family we at a loss as to what to say.  But more times than not, saying nothing and simply being there for mutual support is worth more than saying a word.  A hug, a solemn hand shake or just the touch of another speaks more loudly than anything we might say.

We have heard about Kelsey today.  Many of you had the privilege of knowing her, growing up with her and going to school with her.  My words for us this morning comes to us from a man who knew first hand what the loss of a loved one was all about. It was written by none other than the brother of Jesus.  His name was James.  His words speak volumes at a time like this.  When we lose a loved one and friend, we are reminded of how truly fragile life really is.  He says, “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow.”  We are never guaranteed a tomorrow.  What we have is today.
