Jesus Our Intercessor
The book of Hebrews is a book that is rich with Old
Testament imagery.
Within its pages, we find promises and types
that have found fulfillment in the New Testament with the arrival of Messiah
– Jesus. For instance, we have the promise in Isaiah 9:6, “For
unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given, and the government shall be
upon His shoulders and His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty
God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.”
In our text this morning, we find fulfillment of this
promise in Hebrews 7:25.
Jesus is our Wonderful Counselor.
A counselor is one who listens to your side of
the story, one who gives you solid advice and represents you in a court of
law.
Our Counselor is Jesus!
We discover here in chapter 7 that, in Christ, God has
given us a better hope.
In verse 19, this hope may be spelled with a
capital, if we wish, because Jesus – Messiah – is our only hope if we desire
to find peace and forgiveness from God.
In verse 22, Jesus is said to make sure of a better
covenant.
The Old Testament covenant was concerning the
one to come, even the system of law and sacrifice God designed was to point
men toward Messiah.
There is so much imagery and so many types in the Old
Testament that find fulfillment in Jesus that we just don’t have the time to
discuss them all.
But one bears mentioning this morning as we
celebrate the birth of the Wonderful Counselor, our intercessor, Jesus
Christ.
That type is found in the Old Testament laws
Day of Atonement.
Each year, people offered countless offerings
and burnt sacrifices before God at the temple in Jerusalem.
Before there was a permanent building, they
presented them at the tent of God – the portable tabernacle built by Moses
and the people of Israel.
