A Sermon on Stewardship
I Kings 17:8-16

What do you make of this statement?  God helps those who help themselves.  The Bible study group I led some time ago had that statement show up in their study materials.  What do you think of it?  A lot of people think that is biblical, but it is not – it appears nowhere in the Bible.

As one who looks into the Bible concerning this statement, we find just the opposite.  God helps those who are helpless.  All that we are or would ever hope to be is all a result of God seeking us out and giving us a helping hand.

Some have thought that the Law was intended to be the means by which we attain Divine acceptance.  Wrong!  Galatians 3:24 says that “the Law was our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ.”  The schoolmaster was one who was in charge of his masters’ children.  It was the schoolmaster’s responsibility to bring the child to and from school and to make sure they studied.  The Law was intended for that purpose; to point out how truly in need we were.
