Food & Faith
God is affording us a great opportunity through the World Hunger Fund.
This
brings us to our central passage this morning. James 2:15-17, “Suppose a
brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.
If one of you says to him, go, I wish you well;
keep warm and well fed, but does nothing about his physical needs, what good
is it?
In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not
accompanied by action, is dead.”
Can you imagine the audacity of such a one to say,
have a nice day to a hungry person instead of giving them something to
eat?
Can you imagine the crudeness of one saying to
someone freezing with no coat, keep warm?
You see if we have no action to our faith,
our faith is a dead faith.
Yet, our church and others like us think of
ourselves and not others.
Baptist churches are known for their
carry-in dinners and food extravaganzas.
Why can’t we be known for going down to the
Forest Avenue shelter and feeding the hungry?
Why can’t we be known as the soup church or
the sandwich church?
Why can’t we get out of our comfort zone
and take food to the homeless under the bridges of our city?
