Advent is an attempt to bring about a set aside time to prepare ourselves as Christians to celebrate the birth of our Savior.  The word Advent is derived from the Latin root meaning “to come” or “to arrive.”  Advent has traditionally carried with it a dual focus.  One concerns the joyous first coming of our Lord Jesus as Emmanuel: God with us.  The other focus is upon the second advent, the coming of our Lord in power and judgment.  The two are very definitely tied to one another.
